To update your router firmware, you need access to the router. To get access to the router, you need to enter a specific address (IP address) in the browser.
This address is generally provided with the router instruction manual with the login details. If you are unable to find the instructions manual or unable to find the address in the manual, then follow the steps given below to get the address manually:
- Right-click on the Start menu and select the Network Connections option from the pop-up menu. This will open the Network Status settings.
- In the Network Status settings, click on the Properties option of the router.
- Scroll down until you reach the Properties section.
- In the Properties section, locate the IPv4 DNS server and note down the IP address written beside it.
Now that you have obtained the IP address, it is time to log in to the router and update its firmware. To do it, follow the steps given below:
- First, connect the router with an Ethernet cable, so that the network connection remains stable during the update.
- Open your internet browser and write down the IP address you noted earlier in the address bar.
- Enter your login details. You should find the login details in the router’s manual, otherwise, contact the people where you got the router from.
- After you have logged in, find the Firmware upgrade or router upgrade or something similar option and click on it. Generally, this option will be located in the Administration, Maintenance, or Utilities section. However, the location of this option varies for each router model.
- After you have selected the Firmware upgrade option, you should be able to see the details of your current firmware including its release date. Note the details down.
- Now, visit your router manufacturer’s website. Once there, navigate to the Support section or anything similar. Find your router model and check whether any firmware update is available by comparing it with the details you noted down earlier.
- If you find any firmware update, then download it to your PC. Once it is downloaded, extract the files to a folder in an easily accessible location.
- Now, there should be an update section in your router and you should find a Browse or Choose file option available beside it. Click on it and navigate to the files that you just extracted.
- After you have chosen the file, start the upgrade, and then wait for it to finish.
- The update process will likely take some time, so do not close it prematurely.
- After the update is complete, your router should restart on its own. After the restart, you will find that the new firmware features have been implemented.
That’s it. This is how to update router firmware.
There is a chance that the firmware update may fail. In such a scenario, you will have to reset the router and try again to update it.
To reset the router, you should find a Reset option after logging in to your router. If such an option is missing, then press and hold the reset button on your router for 5 seconds. After you have reset your router, you will need to configure the wireless network settings again.
Some routers automatically update their firmware and do not need manual intervention. If your router is one of them, then you do not need to follow the above steps.
