rollback netcode being adopted beyond fighting games is the technical change i’m most interested in. the difference in online play quality between games with good rollback and games with delay-based netcode is night and day. more developers treating netcode as a feature rather than an afterthought is a genuine improvement in online gaming quality.
Cloud gaming maturity varies enormously by connection quality and geography. On a good fiber connection with low latency to the server, it’s genuinely impressive. On a typical home broadband connection with variable latency, the experience is still noticeably degraded for fast-paced games. The technology works – the infrastructure deployment is the remaining gap.
AI anti-cheat analyzing behavioral patterns is a significant evolution from signature-based detection. Pattern analysis can catch novel cheat implementations that haven’t been seen before, rather than needing a database update for every new cheat. The tradeoff is false positive risk, which has caused controversy in some games.
the technologies actually changing online gaming right now, without the hype:
cloud gaming has matured but remains latency-limited. it’s viable for single-player games and turn-based genres. for anything requiring sub-50ms response times (competitive shooters, fighting games), it’s still not there for most users. the infrastructure improved but physics can’t be patched.
dedicated server networks have improved substantially. major titles now use anycast routing and edge servers that reduce regional latency significantly compared to 5 years ago. less visible but probably the biggest practical improvement for online play.
AI in game development is real and impactful, but mostly on the production side: procedural content generation, NPC behavior, QA automation, and asset creation pipelines. the player-facing AI features (dynamic difficulty, AI companions) are less mature than marketing suggests.
anti-cheat has become significantly more invasive. kernel-level anti-cheat (vanguard, easy anti-cheat with kernel mode) is now standard for competitive titles. this has reduced cheating in some games and created system stability and privacy concerns as a tradeoff.
cross-platform play has normalized. the holdouts are fewer. this is a genuine quality-of-life change that expanded player pools for most online games.
the metaverse and blockchain gaming remain almost entirely hype with minimal actual player adoption.
Cross-play being standard now is a meaningful quality-of-life change that happened gradually enough that people stopped noticing it. A few years ago cross-platform multiplayer with friends on different hardware was a notable selling point. Now it’s expected and games without it get criticized for the omission.
