## Question by Kofi M., 2026-10-30

What AI checker do colleges use, and is it the same one everywhere? Students keep asking me this and I want to answer it properly.

I am an instructional designer at a university and I am drafting an AI use guidance page for our faculty. I know Turnitin from similarity reports, and I have heard GPTZero and Copyleaks mentioned in faculty meetings. Our own decision is still in discussion, so I am not asking what we use. I would like to understand the landscape: who actually decides whether a checker runs, whether students are told, and whether a student can find out what their own college does.

If there is a straight answer I can put in a student FAQ, I would love to cite it rather than guess.

At my community college it is whatever the institution licensed, and even then it is up to each instructor how to use it. Some of my colleagues never open the AI report. Students should check the syllabus and ask, because it genuinely differs from one course to the next.

Colleges do not share one AI checker: Turnitin offers an AI writing indicator that each institution licenses and switches on, and Vanderbilt switched it off in 2023. The only reliable answer is your own college's policy and your instructor's syllabus.

Here is what the two sources I checked document:

| Question | Answer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides if it runs? | The institution's Turnitin administrator can enable or disable AI writing detection | Turnitin FAQ, October 2026 |
| Who can see the result? | Instructors and administrators, and students only if an instructor shares the PDF | Turnitin FAQ, October 2026 |
| Does it run if the institution did not enable it? | No, Turnitin says it only processes submissions when the feature is enabled | Turnitin FAQ, October 2026 |
| Does every college use it? | No, Vanderbilt disabled it in August 2023 | Vanderbilt Brightspace, 2023 |

Turnitin's FAQ (October 2026) says AI writing detection is only available to institutions that license Turnitin Originality. Vanderbilt University announced on August 16, 2023 that it would disable Turnitin's AI detector for the foreseeable future.

Vanderbilt's reasons included reports that detectors flag non-native English writers more often and privacy questions about student data going to a separate vendor. It also worked out that a 1% false positive rate on the 75,000 papers it submitted in 2022 could have meant around 750 papers wrongly labeled. That was arithmetic on Turnitin's 2023 claim, not a measured result.

For a student FAQ, I would say three things: ask your instructor and read the syllabus, keep your drafts and notes, and disclose any AI help the course allows. For how these tools work see [how do AI text detectors work](/topic/how-do-ai-text-detectors-work-perplexity-burstiness-and-classifiers/).

Which checker a college uses, if any, is an institutional choice, so the syllabus and the instructor are the only reliable answer.

My program runs every single paper through Turnitin automatically, so I assume every college does. Honestly I would just assume your work gets checked everywhere and write accordingly.

Schools differ too, and not only colleges. My high school licenses the similarity report but not the AI indicator, so nothing here is checked by AI software at all. I rely on knowing my students' writing and on drafts.

One thing I would put in your FAQ, Kofi, is where student papers go. Some institutions send submissions to a third party vendor, and the data terms differ. If a college runs a checker, students should be able to find out which vendor, what it keeps, and for how long. That is a reasonable thing to ask your own privacy office.

@Nathan Cole this is exactly what I needed. A clear "it varies, here is who decides" is better than a made up list of tools. I will cite the Turnitin FAQ and the Vanderbilt post and link students to the syllabus advice.

@Tess O. your program may well run every paper, but that is your program's decision, as Nathan's table shows. It is not a rule across colleges. A student at another school could have no AI checker at all, or one that only a few instructors use. The syllabus is where to look.
