Google Photos was launched more than five years ago with the mission of saving users’ memories and keeping them safe for eternity. The media management app has updated over the years and added multiple features like AI for stitching your pictures into meaningful collages or groups for users to relive their pleasant memories.
Google Photos currently has more than 4 trillion photos and videos with over 28 billion new photos videos getting uploaded each week. For all these years, Google Photos allowed unlimited upload storage for high quality photos, and only applied a limit on massive original photos. Even this limit was missing for Google Pixel users.
This amazing photo cloud storage has recently changed its upload storage policy, which I have discussed in detail below.
Google Photos Storage Limit
For all these years, Google Photos allowed unchecked upload of high quality photos and videos, and only applied a cap on original photos. The high quality photos were compressed while uploaded to save space (any photo larger than 16 MP gets resized to 16 MP), while the original photos counted towards the Google Cloud Storage limit.
Even this small limit was not applied to Google Pixel users as they could upload even original photos uncapped.
But with over 4 trillion photos and videos already uploaded and around 28 billion new photos and videos getting uploaded each week, Google has decided to put a Google Photos cloud storage limit, starting from June 1, 2021.
Google has decided to allow only 15 Gb of cloud space for each Google Account after June 1, 2021. However, Google Pixel (5 or earlier) can still upload unlimited high-quality photos on Google Photos. But uploading original photos on Google Pixel will still count towards the 15 Gb cap.
What Happens To The Already Uploaded Media On Google Photos?
Google has assured that this new policy will only be implemented after June 1, 2021. Till June 1, the older policies remain, so you can still upload unlimited high-quality photos and videos, without any capping. Obviously, the original photos still count towards the 15 Gb storage cap.
All the uploaded photos before June 1, 2021 will not be counted towards the 15 Gb storage. Only the photos uploaded after the mentioned date will be counted. So, you can still upload Google Photos excessively till then.
Important Details Regarding Inactive Google Accounts
Google has also decided to introduce a new policy where it can delete photos and videos from inactive accounts. Accounts that haven’t been logged in at least 2 years can have its uploaded photos and videos deleted. This is potentially to stop users from creating multiple accounts for bypassing the 15 Gb cap.
How To Increase Google Photos Cloud Storage Limit?
If you are not satisfied with the free 15 GB of Google Photos limit, you can purchase more space by subscribing to the Google One cloud storage plan.
