Best Single Player PC Games of All Time

people ask me for single player PC game recs constantly so I figured I'd write this out properly instead of typing the same thing over and over.

This isn’t just a ‘popular titles’ list – I tried to include some that are less obvious. Also I’m not ranking these against each other because that’s how arguments start.

The Ones That Changed What I Expected From a Game

The Witcher 3 – Still the benchmark for open world RPG. Quest writing is still some of the best in the genre. If you haven’t played it, the complete edition goes on sale often and is worth every cent.

Hollow Knight – Metroidvania that’s hard to put down. Controls precisely, the world building is done almost entirely without text. The difficulty is real but fair.

Disco Elysium – Not an action game. More of an interactive novel with RPG mechanics. Probably the most original writing I’ve seen in games. Not for everyone but if it clicks it really clicks.

Outer Wilds – This one is hard to explain without spoiling it. Just go in blind. Trust the recommendation.

Dark Souls (any of them) – The skill curve is steep but the feeling when it clicks is unlike anything else. I’d start with the original or Elden Ring if you want something more open.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – Recent but already a classic. Deep RPG, huge replayability, turns-based combat that actually feels tactical.

Subnautica – Survival and exploration underwater. Legitimately tense atmosphere. One of the best uses of an alien world design.

Planescape: Torment – Old. Rough to play now without patches. But the writing is still unmatched in the CRPG genre. “What can change the nature of a man?” is still one of the best opening questions in gaming.

What I’d Tell Someone Starting Out

If you don’t know what to try first: Witcher 3 or BG3 if you like RPGs, Hollow Knight if you like challenge, Outer Wilds if you want to feel something.

What are your picks for must-play single player games?

outer wilds got me. i told my friend to go in blind and he texted me halfway through like 'what is happening' in the best way possible. zero spoilers is the only way to play that one

Disco Elysium is the one I recommend to people who say they don’t like games. it’s closer to reading than playing. the skill check system is genuinely innovative.

subnautica deserves more mentions. the fear response that game generates from environment design alone is impressive. no jump scares, just dread. genuinely skilled work.
