can’t get google docs to print. clicking print either does nothing, opens a dialog that immediately closes, or the document comes out blank.
browser is chrome, printer works fine from other apps. tried a different document in google docs, same issue.
what’s the actual fix for this? i’ve seen suggestions about browser extensions and pdf download workarounds but want to understand whether this is a chrome issue, a printer driver issue, or something google docs specific.
also: is the ctrl+P shortcut different from using the file menu print option in google docs? i’ve heard they behave differently but not sure if that’s relevant here.
The download as PDF and print workaround is the one I use almost exclusively for Google Docs now. It gives you complete control over the output, the formatting is exactly what you see, and you avoid the Google Docs print pipeline entirely. For anything important, it’s the more reliable path.
the incognito test to isolate extension issues is the right first diagnostic for any browser-related printing problem. if it prints in incognito but not in a normal window, an extension is definitely the cause. from there you can go through extensions one by one to find it.
The “Open in system dialog” link in the Google print preview being the path to the actual OS printer dialog is something people miss. They see the Google preview, click Print, and expect the system printer dialog to appear. Without clicking that link first, you stay in Google’s print interface which has limited printer-specific settings.
google docs has its own print flow that bypasses the standard browser print dialog, which causes some of the problems you’re seeing.
the right way to print from google docs: use Ctrl+P or File > Print. this opens google’s print preview first, not the system dialog. from there, click “Print” again to get the actual system dialog with your printer options. if you try to print using the browser’s native Ctrl+P before google’s dialog loads, behavior can be unpredictable.
if the dialog opens but the printer isn’t showing: the printer needs to be the default system printer or specifically selected. sometimes google docs doesn’t see network printers properly. workaround: File > Download > PDF document, then print the PDF directly from your printer.
if the document prints blank: this is usually a rendering issue in the print driver. the PDF download and print method also fixes this: it forces google docs to render a clean version outside the browser.
if the print dialog doesn’t open at all: a browser extension is the most common cause. open an incognito window (extensions are disabled by default) and try printing from there. if it works in incognito, an extension is blocking it. disable extensions one by one to find the culprit. ad blockers and privacy extensions are the usual suspects.
chrome vs other browsers: chrome and google docs are both google products and generally work best together, but chrome-specific caching issues can interfere. try clearing chrome’s cache if incognito works but regular chrome doesn’t.
Printer driver updates being relevant for Google Docs specifically is non-obvious. Browser-based printing relies on the OS print spooler and drivers more than native app printing. An outdated driver that works fine for Word may have compatibility issues with browser print jobs. Manufacturer drivers rather than Windows generic drivers are generally more compatible.
