How to Create a Microsoft Account With a Gmail Address

You don’t need an Outlook or Hotmail address to have a Microsoft account. You can create one using any existing email address, including Gmail. Here’s how.

Creating a Microsoft account with Gmail

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com
  2. Click “Sign in” then “Create one”
  3. On the “Create account” screen, click “Use your email instead” (if it defaults to creating a new Outlook address)
  4. Enter your Gmail address and click Next
  5. Create a password for your Microsoft account
  6. Microsoft will send a verification code to your Gmail address
  7. Enter the code to verify ownership
  8. Complete the remaining setup steps (name, birthdate, CAPTCHA)

Your Microsoft account is now linked to your Gmail address. You sign in to all Microsoft services – Xbox, OneDrive, Office, Windows – using your Gmail address and the password you created.

Important distinction

Your Gmail account and your Microsoft account are completely separate. Your Microsoft account uses your Gmail address as its username/identifier, but it has its own separate password. Changing your Gmail password doesn’t affect your Microsoft account and vice versa.

Microsoft does not access your Gmail inbox. Your Gmail address is just used as a contact point for verification and account recovery.

Using it for Windows sign-in

When setting up or signing into Windows 10 or 11, you’ll be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account. Enter your Gmail address and the Microsoft account password you created. Windows will recognize it as a valid Microsoft account.

Changing the email address later

If you want to change which email address is associated with your Microsoft account later (for example, switching from Gmail to an Outlook address), you can do so via account.microsoft.com > Your info > Manage how you sign in to Microsoft > Add email. You can add an Outlook alias and then set it as the primary sign-in address without losing any account data.

Troubleshooting

“That Microsoft account doesn’t exist”: If you try to sign in and get this error, your Gmail address hasn’t been registered as a Microsoft account yet. Follow the creation steps above.

Verification email not arriving: Check your Gmail spam folder. Microsoft’s verification emails occasionally get filtered. If it’s not there after a few minutes, use the “resend code” option.

The separate passwords point is worth emphasizing. I’ve seen people get confused thinking their Gmail password is their Microsoft account password. They’re completely independent credentials that happen to share an email address as an identifier. The Microsoft account has its own password that you set during creation.
