closed a game and steam still shows it as running. can’t launch it again, can’t use it for family sharing, and the library just shows it as active.
tried closing steam and reopening. still there. the game itself is definitely not running, no window, no process i can obviously see.
what actually fixes this? i’ve seen people say task manager but i’m not sure which processes to end without breaking something. is there a steam-native way to kill it or does it always require going into task manager?
also is this a known issue with specific games or just a general steam bug? happened to me twice with the same game so wondering if that’s relevant.
Anti-cheat processes staying alive after the game closes is the most common cause of this. EasyAntiCheat and BattlEye both run as separate processes that should clean up on game exit but sometimes don’t. Task Manager > Details, looking for those specific process names, and ending them clears the stuck state.
the kill process option in steam library right-click is underused. most people go straight to task manager but steam’s own kill option is faster. right-click the stuck game in the library, if it shows as running you’ll see the kill option right there.
Steam’s web helper process (steamwebhelper.exe) sometimes needs to be ended along with the main Steam.exe for a proper restart. The web helper handles the store browser and can keep Steam in a state where it thinks games are still running even after the main UI closes.
the cause is the game’s process not cleanly exiting. steam tracks game state through the process. if the game crashed, a subprocess kept running, or anti-cheat didn’t close properly, steam still shows it as active.
fastest fix: in the steam library, right-click the stuck game and click “Kill Process” if it shows that option. steam sends a termination signal directly.
if that doesn’t appear or doesn’t work, go to task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) > Details tab. look for the game’s .exe and related processes. anti-cheat processes like EasyAntiCheat.exe and BattlEye.exe are common culprits. right-click each > End Task. steam should clear the status within a minute.
if task manager doesn’t work either, close steam completely (Steam menu > Exit, not just closing the window), then reopen it. steam re-checks running processes on launch.
nuclear option: restart the computer. clears all process states.
the patience note: anti-cheat software can take 3-5 minutes to fully shut down after game close. if you just closed the game, wait before assuming it’s stuck.
This stuck running state preventing Family Sharing is a practical frustration worth noting. If you share your library and a game shows as running, your family member can’t launch it. Resolving the stuck process quickly matters in that context. The Steam Kill Process right-click is the fastest path.
