Can AI humanizers bypass Turnitin?

Can AI humanizers actually bypass Turnitin’s AI detection, or is that mostly wishful thinking?

I’m asking to understand the actual mechanics, not to find a way to cheat. My university uses Turnitin’s AI indicator and I want to know whether it updates its model in response to humanizers becoming popular, or if there’s a stable gap that holds over time.

Turnitin has publicly stated it continuously updates its AI detection model, which includes training on outputs from popular humanizer tools once they reach enough usage to be worth targeting specifically.

From an academic integrity standpoint I’d add: even when a humanized score is lower, that’s a score reduction, not proof of human authorship. Institutions are increasingly looking at the score as one signal among several, not a binary verdict.

The honest mechanical answer: there’s no stable, permanent bypass. Anything that works today is working against Turnitin’s current model, which gets retrained periodically. What worked six months ago may not work now.

worth remembering Turnitin’s own documentation is upfront that the AI score has a margin of error and shouldn’t be the sole basis for an academic integrity case. that’s a separate point from whether humanizing changes the score, but it’s relevant context.

From the teacher side: institutions using Turnitin’s AI score as the sole basis for action without other evidence is itself a policy failure, separate from whether humanizers technically work. That’s a conversation worth having with your specific program if you’re concerned.
