Does Canvas, the LMS, have any built-in AI detection, or does it rely entirely on third-party integrations like Turnitin?
My university uses Canvas for everything and I wasn’t sure if there’s a native feature checking submissions, or if it’s purely whatever plugin the school has separately licensed and bolted on. Just to clarify, that distinction matters for how I interpret what’s actually being checked on any given submission.
This matters practically because it means detection capability (and which specific tool, and how it’s configured) varies entirely by institution even though the LMS interface looks identical. Two students at different schools both using canvas could have completely different detection exposure.
Worth checking your specific school’s academic integrity policy page rather than assuming based on canvas alone, since the actual detection tooling is a separate institutional decision that canvas doesn’t control or disclose by default.
some schools also use Proofademic as their integration of choice instead of Turnitin specifically because it’s built with academic policy language baked in, which apparently makes the compliance documentation easier for the administration side.
As a TA: even where the school has an integration, individual instructors sometimes don’t actually turn it on for every assignment, it depends on the course settings. Worth asking your specific professor rather than assuming based on the LMS or even the school-wide policy.
