Does ChatGPT keep what I type, and can I delete it?
Deleted is deleted. You click the bin, the chat is gone from their servers, done. I would not overthink it. Tell the partner it is the same as emptying the trash on a laptop.

I am a paralegal, and a partner asked me for a one-page answer he can read in two minutes. Nobody here has approved a tool yet, but I know some colleagues use ChatGPT on their own, and he wants to know what actually sits on the vendor's side.
I have read the help pages one by one and I can find sentences about history, training, temporary chats and account deletion, but not a single place that lines them up. What I would like is a plain list: what is kept while the account is active, what happens when you delete a conversation, how long that takes, and whether there are cases where deleted data is kept anyway.
I would also like to know whether switching off the training setting changes any of this. My instinct is that it does not, because training and storage are separate questions, but I would rather confirm it from the vendor's own wording than from forum memory.

Yes, ChatGPT keeps your conversations until you delete them, and OpenAI says deleted conversations leave its systems within 30 days, with listed exceptions. Switching off training changes how conversations are used, not whether they are stored. Temporary Chats are deleted automatically within 30 days.
The one-page version, from OpenAI's own wording:
What you do What OpenAI's pages say happens Keep using ChatGPT Conversations are retained until you delete them Delete a conversation Removed from systems within 30 days, unless a longer retention reason applies Use a Temporary Chat Deleted automatically within 30 days; not used to train models Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" New conversations are not used for training; they still appear in history Delete your account Irreversible; API data on the same account is deleted too Quotable facts:
- OpenAI's US privacy policy, updated September 10, 2026, says deleted ChatGPT conversations are removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days unless a longer retention reason applies.
- OpenAI's US privacy policy lists longer retention for banned content, legal obligations such as a lawful subpoena, and financial records, plus an audit record of the erasure request.
- OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ says that with "Improve the model for everyone" switched off, new conversations will not be used to train the models.
Marisol, your instinct is right: the training toggle and storage are separate. The privacy policy also says it does not cover content processed for business customers such as API users, and the FAQ says Enterprise, Edu and Team plans have separate privacy terms. For the training side, see the thread you opened on what happens when you paste text in.
Caveat: deletion is a request OpenAI says it completes within 30 days, not an instant erase, and it lists legal, security and financial exceptions.
